According to American Express, this Saturday, November 26, 2011, is Small Business Saturday. I support Lower West Side businesses as often as possible because I believe small, family-owned enterprises are truly the “American Dream” in action.
I also want to save on gas…Hey, I never said I was totally unselfish.
Anyway, here are a few of my favorite places to shop in Pilsen/UIC. Consider spending your money at one of the following stores:
Tonantzin-1173 W. 18th St
For fair trade, handmade, unique gifts from Mexico and other countries in Latin America, Tonantzin is the place to go. Mutli-colored scarves, embroidered purses, beaded jewelry as well as artwork are just some of the many artesania for sale. It’s worth the walk from the Pink Line.
Rex Recycled Fashion-939 W 18th St
Of all the used clothing stores in Pilsen, this one is my favorite. Rex stands out because they don’t just sell “vintage” clothes, as in 1980′s on back. I found current, trendy pieces there for under $20 each. Check them out at their Midnight Sale during the December Second Fridays,
Gentile’s Wine Shop-1160 W. Taylor St
Gentile’s, the sister store of Printer’s Row Wine Shop, is a small wine shop that handpicks and sells wine from small wineries. It’s the perfect choice for anyone on your list who likes wine, specialty microbews or other unique spirits. The prices are reasonable, with sale bottles of wine often going for less than $15.00.
