When you think of Mad River Bar & Grille, you probably don’t think of food. But that’s about to change.
Last week, the Lakeview hotspot introduced an entirely new menu as a result of a new head chef’s refreshed vision for the establishment. From a lamb burger with goat cheese to a fresh caprese salad, the new menu items are must-try dishes that’ll no doubt soon have the neighbors talking. (DMK Burger, we’re looking at you.)
The ‘Riv’s new fare is all about the freshest ingredients – pickled jams, freshly baked burger buns and quality meats and cheeses. We tried the Crab Cakes, Wild Mushroom Pizza Bread and Thai Chicken Burger. It’s an understatement to say that I was surprisingly impressed. I walked in expecting typical bar food and left with a tummy full of deliciousness.
The crab cakes were delightfully crispy on the outside and moist on the inside, served with lightly dressed fresh greens and an out-of-this world caper remoulade sauce. My boyfriend may have licked the remaining sauce off the plate long after we finished our appetizer. Yes, it’s that good, and totally worth the $10 for two cakes.
The Wild Mushroom Pizza Bread is a classy rendition of crispy pizza bread with smoked Gouda cheese, goat cheese and onion truffle jam. My only complaint with this one is that we gobbled up the slices fairly quickly and wished the portions were a bit bigger. Still, if you’re looking for something with a cheesey edge, go for it. This was the boyfriend’s favorite.
And for the grand finale, my new favorite sandwich - the glorious, unparalleled Thai Chicken Burger. (Are you drooling from that photo? Because I am.) This big guy comes stacked high with spicy Thai chili-pineapple chutney, sprouts, pickled veggies and brioche sesame. What’s brioche? I have no idea. But it was outstanding. Especially for someone who chooses not to eat red meat, I was thrilled to see such superb toppings on a chicken sandwich.
So next time you’re looking for a good bite to eat on Sheffield, think twice. I think we’ve just added one more go-to food joint to Lakeview’s long list of delicious establishments.
And Thai Chicken Burger – rest assured, we will meet again soon.
