The Chicago Tribune offers some counter-programming to all the attention paid to protesters against a Walmart in Lakeview. From the editorial board:
When PetSmart and Cost Plus World Market moved into Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, residents didn’t rise up in protest.
Now that Wal-Mart has announced plans to take over the site of those stores, everything’s different.
The nation’s biggest merchant gets a lot of heat for its workplace practices and opposition to unions. Don’t like Wal-Mart? Fine, don’t shop there.
Given the company’s modest proposal for a store greatly scaled down to fit the neighborhood, however, there’s no good reason to keep Wal-Mart out of Lakeview — only bad reasons.
